Song of the Week: A Worship Song about Choosing Jesus Over Everything

What does it really mean to be free?

I often think of freedom as having no restrictions. Doing whatever I want without anybody telling me no or saying, “That's not a good idea.” Or finally being in the season of my life I had always dreamed about.

But that is nothing compared to the freedom that is found in Jesus. It is so much deeper.

This week's song was one that was sent to me by a really close friend of mine. She shared this song with me from a place where she needed the truth that the lyrics held, and she wanted to share that truth with me, too. This song is a reminder that true freedom is found when we hold Jesus above everything else in our lives.

There is something powerful about the way a worship song can shift our attention away from what we are feeling and put it back on who God is and what He means to us. Sometimes we go into worship carrying our worries, fears, expectations and the things we are trying to control. But when our eyes are fixed on Jesus, we are reminded that He is worth more than all of it.

Jesus is over everything in our lives.

Paul writes in Philippians 3:8, “I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”

Paul wasn't saying that everything we have in this life holds no value. He was saying that nothing compares to knowing Jesus and having a relationship with Him.

And I think that is where true freedom begins.

It is easy to say that Jesus is first in our lives, but sometimes our priorities don't reflect that. We put our careers, relationships, dreams, reputation, and even what we think God's plan should look like first. Sometimes, without even realizing it, we start asking Jesus to fit into the life we have mapped out for ourselves instead of allowing Him to lead us into the life He has planned for us.

What would it look like to choose Jesus over everything?

I don't have the answer to everything, and I don't know what the future holds. But I do know that I can trust Jesus with everything. He knows what the future holds, even when I don't.

And even knowing that, my life did not suddenly become easy. It just made it easier to determine where my hope is found.

My hope is found in Jesus.

Philippians 3:8 gives us such a beautiful picture of this. Paul says that everything else is worth considering as loss compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ.

Jesus is not simply a part of our lives. He is the reason for our lives. And when we truly believe that, it changes the way we see everything else.

So this week, let “Place of Freedom” be more than a song you listen to. Let it become a prayer:

Jesus, You are greater than my plans.
Greater than my fears.
Greater than my dreams.
Greater than my circumstances.
Greater than everything I could ever gain or lose.

Because when we know the surpassing worth of knowing Christ, we can hold everything else with open hands.

And that is freedom.
