The Lord Is My Shepherd: Finding Peace, Provision + Purpose in Psalm 23
Do you ever feel like everyone is depending on you? Your family, your friends, your job? It’s easy to start believing that everything and everyone is depending on you. But Psalm 23: 1-3 says otherwise. This passage reminds us that we were never meant to carry it all on our own. We were never meant to go through this life on our own with no goal or end in sight. We are called to but our trust in the Lord. Let Him shepherd us, lead us and take what we were never meant to carry.
Psalm 23:1-3 "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake."
Psalm 23:1–3 paints a picture of who God truly is in our lives. He is our Shepherd, the One who provides what we need, gives us rest when we’re worn down, brings peace in the middle of chaos, and restores what feels empty. He leads us forward with purpose, guiding us in the right direction even when we don’t fully understand.
Let's take a second to break these verses down and dive deeper into the meaning and the power they hold.
"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want."
This verse is a reminder that we are not left to take care of ourselves. A shepherd provides, protects and guides his sheep, that's exactly how God cares for us. When we are lost, He provides a way. When we are worn down, He picks us up. He opens doors we thought were closed. He makes a way for us when there is no way. In his eyes, we are never forgotten. “I shall not want” doesn't mean that everything we desire or think we deserve will be given to us, but that everything we truly need to fulfill our calling from God will be given to us. Because let's be honest, all we deserve in this life is death, but our God is a merciful God and sent His one and only son to die on the cross for our sins. In a world that constantly tells us we are lacking and don't fit the image it's trying to force, this truth challenges that mindset.
"He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters."
Sometimes our first instinct is not to rest, we keep pushing, striving and filling our lives with worldly noise. But God calls us to rest anyway. Green pastures and still waters are images of peace, provision and calm, the opposite of chaos or hurry. He knows what we need even when we resist slowing down. Sometimes the very thing we’re fighting is exactly where He’s trying to lead us.
"He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake."
God doesn’t just give us rest, He restores us. He meets us in our stress and our emptiness, and renews us from the inside out. Once He restores us, He doesn’t leave us where we are. He guides us forward, leading us in the right direction. His path isn’t for us, it isn't random, it has purpose. It reflects His goodness, His faithfulness and His name.
It’s easy to read this passage and feel comforted, but it’s another thing to actually live it. So often, we carry things we were never meant to hold, striving to provide or meet expectations we set for ourselves, leading and fixing everything on our own. But this passage reminds us that we already have a Shepherd who provides and guides us.
The question isn’t whether God is leading and providing; it's whether we’re allowing Him to.
Are we trusting Him to meet our needs, or are we living as if it all depends on us?
He is inviting us to let go, to trust, and to follow.
