Even Here, He Has a Plan
One of my favorite verses is Jeremiah 29:11. So, when I knew this verse was the inspiration behind September’s tee, it felt like such a God thing, given the season of life I am currently walking through.
Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
Now, in the past, when I heard this verse, I had the common misconception that this verse was the blueprint for a nice and easy life. Boy, was I wrong. I don’t think I realized just how wrong I was until a few days ago.
I was at Bible study when we were going over Jeremiah 29:11, and our leader asked us if we knew what Jeremiah 29:10 said. Nothing. There was not a single clue in my head what Jeremiah 29:10 said, but I know what Jeremiah 29:11 says by heart. In my physical Bible and on my phone, verse 11 is highlighted, but nothing about verse 10.
Jeremiah 29:10 says, “For thus says the Lord: When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will visit you, and I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place.”
Until that day in Bible study, I had never thought about the actual meaning behind the verse. I only applied it in a way that benefited me at the moment, not how God intended it to mean.
Jeremiah 29:11 wasn’t spoken to people who were living their best and easiest lives. It was spoken to God’s people who were in exile. They were exiled from their home, living under the rule of the Babylonians, and there was no near future of freedom.
God didn’t say, “Don’t worry, by tomorrow everything will be better.” He was telling them that He had plans for them, even throughout the 70 years of waiting. Knowing the context of verse 10 completely changes the way I read verse 11.
The promise of a “future and hope” in verse 11 isn’t for the people who were rushing through their seasons of hardship. It wasn’t for the people who didn’t trust in the plans and in God’s timing.
The promise in verse 11 was for the people who settled, endured the discipline from God, and trusted and waited faithfully for God’s timing and for it to be His will, not their own.
For so long, I think I had treated Jeremiah 29:11 almost like a promise that if I followed God, my life would eventually fall into place exactly the way I hoped it would. But that’s not what God was promising His people. He was promising His presence, His faithfulness and a future.
And that was exactly the reminder I needed in this season of my life.
Jeremiah 29:11 doesn’t tell me that everything happening in my life right now is easy. It doesn’t tell me that I will get every answer I want or that every circumstance will turn out exactly how I planned.
It reminds me that God sees what I can’t.
He has plans I don’t know about yet. He knows what the future holds for me, and even when I don’t understand what He’s doing, I trust completely in Him and know that He is working all things for good.
God’s plan doesn’t happen on my time. It happens on His.
Maybe you’re in a season where you feel like you’re waiting. Waiting for an answered prayer. Waiting for a door to open or to close. Waiting for something to change.
But Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us that waiting doesn’t mean God has forgotten you.
The silence doesn’t mean He’s abandoned you. The uncertainty doesn’t mean He doesn’t have a plan.
There is a future waiting for you. Have peace, not in knowing what tomorrow holds, but in knowing that God knows exactly the plans He has for you. All you have to do is settle down, trust in Him and be faithful, even in the seasons of waiting.
