Song Of The Week: A Worship Song about Being Free
There is something so powerful about this song. The title alone is enough to stop me from skipping to the next song. "THANK GOD I'M FREE." This song isn't just about showing gratitude, getting a fresh start, or even overcoming a difficult season. This song points our hearts back to something deeper. It points it back to the freedom we have that can only be found through accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior.
The world offers so much. But it is only worldly things we can't take with us. It is all temporary. And we chase chances, thinking they will give us fulfillment, purpose, joy, and peace. We chase relationships, approval from others, experiences, and success, hoping they will fill the hole in our hearts. But it never does.
Jesus offers us something completely different.
We see in John 14:6 that Jesus is the only way to true joy and peace, and the only way to satisfy that longing.
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." He doesn't claim to be one way among many. He is the way. He is the truth. He is the life.
Freedom isn't the absence of boundaries or responsibilities. Freedom is being released from the burden of sin, shame, striving and the endless search for meaning.
Jesus is the way when we don't know which way to go.
Jesus is the truth when the world is leading us in different directions.
Jesus is life when everything is falling apart.
When we follow His lead, trust His Word and place our lives in His hands, we discover the freedom we have been searching for all along. Not a temporary freedom, but a lasting freedom rooted in Him.
That's why the lyrics in this song carry so much meaning. Because through Jesus, we are free from our past. Free from trying to earn God's love. Free to live with purpose, hope and confidence in the truth that is found in John 14:6.
If you've been searching for fulfillment in anything other than Christ, know this: every other road eventually reaches a dead end. Jesus never will. He remains faithful, steady, and true.
Jesus is the way.
Jesus is the truth.
Jesus is the life.
And it's in Him alone that true freedom is found.
Thank God we're free.
