Song of the Week: A Worship Song about Counting Your Blessings
A question I constantly find randomly popping into my mind throughout my day is: “When was the last time I actually stopped and really noticed all God has done in my life?” And you know what … I can’t even remember the last time I just thanked Him for all the blessings in my life. Usually, when I pray, it is to ask for forgiveness or to ask something of Him. It typically is never just to thank Him for everything I have or all He has done for me.
And as I started thinking about that, I realized how easy it is to fall into this habit without even noticing.
It can be so easy to focus on the things we are waiting for, wishing our circumstances were different and thinking about what we are praying to God for.
All these reasons and more are one of the reasons I love this week’s song, “Counting My Blessings” by Seph Schlueter. This song is a reminder to take the time to slow down and recognize the beauty and goodness of God, even when my mind says this is not what my world should look like.
Sometimes our blessings can be the big things in our lives: the job promotion you have been working for years to achieve, the house you just closed on or the people God has placed in your life.
But it can also be the smaller things that are taken for granted.
A conversation with a friend. Seeing a beautiful sunrise. A quiet morning spent in the Word. A prayer that brought peace when life was overwhelming. A door God opened. A door He closed. Another day to wake up and begin again.
When we intentionally look for God’s goodness, we start to realize that our blessings constantly surround us.
One of the greatest blessings of all is the truth that we are fully known by God.
He knows every part of us. He knows the things we are proud of and the things we wish no one knew. He knows our hopes, our fears, our questions, our struggles and our dreams. Nothing about us is hidden from Him.
Even with knowing everything about us, He still chooses to love us.
Our “Fully Known” pullover is more than just a reminder that God knows who we are. It’s a reminder that we don’t have to hide anything from Him. We don’t have to become the best version of ourselves before we are worthy of His love.
We can come exactly as we are because we are already fully known. And what a blessing that is.
So today, instead of only thinking about what you’re waiting for God to do next in your life, take a moment to look back at what He has already done.
Count your blessings. Count the people. Count the lessons. Count the little things that brought you joy. And most importantly, count the ways God has been faithful through every season.
Sometimes we need to change what we are looking for in order to see that our circumstances don’t need to change.
God has been good. He is still good. And even when we don’t understand what He’s doing, we can trust that we are known, loved and never forgotten by Him.
So take a moment today to stop, look around and count your blessings. You may be surprised by just how many there are.
