Back-to-School Bible Verses for Students: Scripture for a New School Year

The start of a new school year can bring a lot of new opportunities, both good and bad. It also brings a lot of change, which at times can lead to a lot of different emotions. This is when you need to look to God the most.

Maybe you're excited to see your friends again, nervous about starting your freshman year in college, overwhelmed by your schedule or unsure of what this next year will look like. For college students, a new school year can bring even bigger changes as you move away from home, start classes, make new friends or begin thinking about what comes after graduation.

Whatever this new season looks like for you, you don't have to walk into it alone.

As you begin a new school year, take time to remind yourself of what is true. God is with you, always. Your identity isn't found in your grades, how many friends you have, your achievements or even what others think of you. Your identity is found on Him and Him alone.

Before your schoolwork begins to pile up, exams start and your calendar is so full there is no time to even rest, take a moment to pause and turn your heart and mind to the One who will be with you through it all.

Let these Bible verses carry you through the new school year and lean on them when life gets overwhelming. When you feel like you can't handle everything being thrown your way, remember that you don't have to do it in your own strength. With God, all things are possible, and He will be with you through every challenge, change and unknown that comes your way.

"I can do all this through him who gives me strength." Philippians 4:13

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6

You may not know what this school year will bring, and that's OK. Walk with God. Invite Him into every aspect of your life and He will make your path straight. You don't have to have every detail of your future figured out. God already knows what lies ahead.

As you make plans for your classes, friendships and future, invite God into every part of it. Trust Him even when you don't understand.

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9.

Starting something new can be intimidating. Maybe you're walking into a new high school, starting your freshman year of college, moving into a dorm or wondering what this year will hold.

But notice what God doesn't say: He doesn't say you won't be nervous or that everything will be easy. Instead, He says that He will be with you wherever you go. Your courage comes from knowing that God is already there.

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10.

You may feel like you're facing this year alone, but you aren't. God will be with you in the classroom, on the field, in the dorm room, during the late-night study sessions and in the moments when you feel like you don't know what you're doing.

"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men." Colossians 3:23.

It isn't always easy. There will be days when the last thing you want to do is go to class or finish the assignment you waited until the last day to finish. Colossians 3:23 gives us a different way to look at feeling unmotivated. Your work isn't about getting the highest grade or proving yourself to everyone around you.

Everything you do is an opportunity to honor God, so work hard at everything you do.

Study faithfully. Give your best effort. Ask for help when you need it. And remember that your worth isn't determined by your GPA.

"Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." Proverbs 27:17

The people you surround yourself with matter more than you realize.

Your friends can influence the way you think, the choices you make and even the way you view yourself and your relationship with God. Look for friendships that encourage you to grow.

Do the people around me help me become more like Jesus? And am I helping them do the same?

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9

You don't have to have everything figured out. You don't have to be perfect. You simply have to keep faithfully taking the next step.

God sees the work that no one else sees.

Keep going. Keep praying. Keep showing up. Keep trusting Him.

"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." Matthew 6:33

This might be the most important reminder to carry as you step into this new season.

It's easy for school to become your entire world. Grades, sports, clubs, friendships, work, relationships and preparing for your future can quickly fill your schedule.

But don't let a busy schedule push God to the margins.

Seek Him first.

Make time for prayer. Open your Bible. Find a church. Surround yourself with people who encourage your faith.

Don't just ask God to bless your school year. Invite Him into it.

As you begin this new school year, remember that you don't have to know all the answers. You simply need to trust the One who does.

Whether you're entering your first year of high school, your senior year, your first semester of college or another year of a journey you didn't expect, God is already ahead of you.

So take a deep breath. Give Him your worries, your hopes and your unknowns.

Here is a prayer to take with you into the new school year.

Lord, help me enter this new school year with my eyes fixed on You. Give me wisdom when I don't know what to do, courage when I'm afraid, strength when I'm tired and peace when I feel overwhelmed. Help me choose friends who point me toward You and give me opportunities to be a reflection of Your love to the people around me. Keep my heart focused on You. Help me remember that my identity is found in You. Go before me in this new season, and help me trust You every step of the way. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
